Family Friendly Phuket: Review of the Angsana Laguna

One of my favourite beaches in Phuket is Bang Tao Bay.  It’s a perfect spot for Phuket – near to some great restaurants, not too far from the airport and lots of shopping and massages close by.  There are a number of hotels in the area and Llinos tested out the Angasana Laguna earlier this year with her husband and two kids (2.5 and 9 months)

When did you go?

April 2014

How was the weather?

Hot and sunny.

How did you book the trip?

Flights booked through Fannie at Sun Travel. Accommodation booked direct with the hotel, online and via email.

What did the price include?

Breakfast included.  Airport transfers were not included but the hotel arranged transfers for us at extra charge.

How was the flight?

The direct flight from Hong Kong with Thai Airways was excellent. Great travel times. We flew out on a Thursday morning and back on a Monday afternoon and both times we had loads of room to stretch out. Our 2.5 year old is now great on short flights, whilst our 9 month old was a bundle of energy but thankfully the flight wasn’t too long.

How far was the hotel from the airport?

One of the major plus points of the hotel is its proximity to the airport, about a twenty-minute drive, so this makes it perfect for a long weekend away from Hong Kong. The hotel had arranged a private transfer for us.

What did you think of the hotel?

Large, family friendly hotel with a choice of room options to make it easier for those with young kids not to have to cram into one small hotel room.   Food was not fantastic but was fine and there were a number of different pools, kids club and they were geared towards young families with high chairs in every restaurant, kids menus and extras such as cots, sterilisers available.

How was your room?

The room was great. We had booked a two bedroom apartment which was basically a town house on three different levels which meant that everyone had their own space to sleep.   They provided a travel cot and some Johnson’s baby toiletries, a squeaky bath toy and a steriliser (which I had requested beforehand).

How were the facilities?

There were several pools across the hotel, and the hotel is on a nice stretch of beach.   Our 2.5 year old loved the ‘sandy’ pool which basically had an artificial beach next to it. We also used the pool which was on the beach a lot as it had lots of shade and a bit of a breeze.

Was there kids club and did you use it?

Yes, a large kids club with an outdoor playground, a soft play area which we used a couple of times when we wanted to escape the heat, a library and lots of activities. They organised lots of events during the day, our daughter did some craft (she had to be accompanied to this as she is under 4 years old) and we also made use of the kids library. They also have a baby elephant who visits the hotel twice a day which our daughter also loved.

Was there a beach?

Yes, the hotel is on a nice stretch of beach which has a few shops and restaurants for those wanting to venture out of the hotel.

Did you do any trips/excursions?

No we didn’t. We stayed in the hotel or on the beach apart from a couple of trips out for lunch.

How was the food?

Food was good. They had a kids menu and were fairly flexible when we asked for things for our nine month old to eat.

How was the staff?

We hired a babysitter to look after our kids in the evening while we had dinner and also to stay in the room with our baby while he had his morning nap so that we could take our eldest to the pool. The babysitters were excellent and I wouldn’t hesitate using them again.   The rest of the staff in the hotel were good.

How was the trip overall?

A nice option for a long weekend away from Hong Kong given the convenience of its location and the fact that its geared towards families, though I’m not sure I would stay there for a longer trip. There are far more luxurious hotels in Phuket but this one has a lot of pluses for those with a young family.

Would you go back?

Yes, for a long weekend.
