Koh Samui Hotel Review: The Akaryn

Akaryn Beach - shrink

One of the reasons I started Jetlag & Mayhem was because I loved quizzing my friends on their trips and gaining inspiration on where to go next.  I love it when you find a hidden gem – a fantastic hotel room that is reasonably priced. Today I reveal the Akaryn in Koh Samui which got the huge thumbs up from Ben and Tara.

5 nights beginning of October

Hotel Booking:
Booked through Esther at August Moon Travel (she’s brilliant). She recommended it and secured discount using Hong Kong ID.  Our pool villa was approx. GBP 150 per night including breakfast

Where is the Akaryn?
The hotel is a 15 minute drive from Koh Samui airport.  We flew to Koh Samui from Hong Kong with Bangkok Airways.  We didn’t organise a transfer through the hotel, just picked up a taxi at the airport.

The hotel is located on Choeng Mon beach and felt quite remote.  To access it you drive off the main road and down a dirt path

What did you think of the room?
Our Pool Villa was fabulous, especially given the price.  The room was very big.  There was a lovely travel cot provided with mosquito net.

The hotel room is an open plan pavilion. It houses a big double bed, a huge bath in middle of room, separate toilet & shower and big dressing area.  Surrounding you are panoramic windows.  Outside is your own private pool which is fairly big.

We didn’t request a steriliser (not sure if they had one) but asked for 2 kettles.

The Pool Villa is very private.  We didn’t have a view as we were surrounded by trees and a wall for privacy.  If you were travelling in a larger group, you could get 2 villas adjoining as there is a sliding door that interconnects.

The Akaryn has a big main pool which is split level in two sections.  There’s also a wet bar which is lots of fun.

There’s a games room with pool table and library.  We also spied a gym but didn’t use it.

How was the beach?

Small but gorgeous, clean and private. That sand isn’t white and powdery, it’s quite gritty.

Dining facilities

The Akaryn has two restaurants.  One is a Western steak place, Ochos Steakhouse.  The other is an international restaurant, The Edge.  Breakfast was incredible – a decent size buffet and a 3 tiered platter stacked with pastries, fruit and cold cuts. Then you get to order the rest e.g. eggs from the menu.

Lunch was excellent, we would have room service while our baby slept.  This was great value for money, both delicious thai and western food.  The pizza is the best we have eaten outside Italy.

We hired a babysitter and ate dinner at The Edge, a very romantic location right on  the beach.

How were the staff?

The staff were all excellent and the Hotel Manager very attentive. The chef came out during dinners to chat with us.

We hired a babysitter twice through the hotel – quite pricey at GBP 14 per hour

Would you go back?
We would 100% return!  The hotel is under new management so they are spending lots of money promoting it. We actually chose it because of its high ranking of Tripadvisor for families.  That said, most of the kids we saw around the hotel were babies.  Older kids might possibly get a bit bored there because of its more remote location.
