Koh Samui Luxury Villa Review: Baan Sawan

Baan Sawan - Infinity View

We recently spent 3 nights at a lovely slice of paradise in the hills of Bophut, Koh Samui.  As I’ve mentioned before, hiring a villa is an extremely cost effective way of having a luxury holiday.  Our 3 bed villa cost approx. USD $350 per night – compare that to one bedroom at the Six Senses for USD $700!

Who went

Me + husband + girls (aged 2 and 5) and our friends with their 5 month old baby

Oct 2 – 5th 2014.  Weather was pretty good on the whole – sunshine and blue skies in the morning although it would get overcast later in the afternoon. We had a few big downpours.

Villa Booking

This was made through luxuryvillasandhomes.com.  Ours was a fairly last minute booking but if you book early enough, be sure to request an early bed discount.  The agent at luxury villas was very helpful and suggested Baan Sawan would be a good villa for the kids as it had a large garden.

If I was to stay at Baan Sawan again, I would bypass the agent and go straight to the owner whom you can contact through their website.

We paid USD $1200 for 3 nights which was split between two families.

Getting to Baan Sawan

We spent the previous night at the Muang Samui in Chaweng so we were only a 15 minute drive away. However, it took a few phone calls to the Villa Manager for the taxi driver to understand where in the Bophut hills the villa was located!

About the Villa

Baan Sawan has 3 bedrooms and is perfect for 2 families sharing or perhaps 1 family with older kids. We had a King Bed and Twin Bedroom which were connected by a bathroom and a hallway.

Our friends had the large Master bedroom which also has an ensuite.  They had requested a baby cot which was provided free of charge.

Living Area

There’s a spacious open plan living, dining and kitchen area.  There is an outdoor dining area, large day bed and smaller table and chairs outside the master bedroom.

A continental breakfast is provided for. We also paid extra to have a chef (who turned out to be the amazing Villa Manager) for several meals. This cost 1500 Baht per meal plus the cost of the groceries.  I highly recommend you let Star cook for you at Baan Sawan, she is sensational!  Even the kids chicken nuggets were the best I have ever eaten…

There is a a medium sized pool with a beautiful infinity edge. I don’t think this would be the best pool for those with younger kids (2 and under) as it is quite deep and there are no shallow steps to climb in.  However, my kids (aged 2 and 5) loved it – especially the lilos provided by the villa.

You are located up in the hills of Bophut so for beach lovers, this isn’t the place for you.  There is a lovely garden which is great for the kids.

What’s on offer for families?

The villa provided a free baby cot which was clean and spacious with a draped mosquito net. There were also huge boxes of pool toys, board games and family DVDs.

What’s there to do in and around the area?

We were feeling pretty lazy so we barely left the villa…  We had spent the previous night in a hotel in Chaweng and the beach there was surprisingly clean with powdery sand (much nicer than the beach at Bophut).  The beach is lined with cheap massage and beauty pavilions where my girls got their hair braided (2 hours!).

One day we had lunch at the Hansar, a luxury contemporary hotel in Bophut (5 minutes drive). Excellent sandwiches! Another night Star babysat for us whilst we pretended we were 20 again at the Ark Bar…

Should I stay in Baan Sawan?

If you don’t need the beach and shops/restaurants right on your doorstep then yes.  This is a beautiful villa, elegantly furnished and the cherry on top are the wonderful couple Sky and Levy who run the place.  They really made us feel at home and helped with restaurant/taxi bookings etc.

When a villa has 2-3 bedrooms then I worry that the villa itself will be small including the pool. However, this is not the case at Baan Sawan, it is a large property with decent sized pool and spacious gardens.  I will definitely be returning!
