Where did you go?

Villa Ban Laem Set, Koh Samui, Thailand

When did you go?

May 2014.  The weather was beautiful – hot, with a short rain storm each afternoon

Holiday Booking

Flights booked online with Bangkok Airways and villa booked separately via Luxury Villas and Homes.  We paid US$4,800 for 6 nights plus chef.  The villa price included:

  • Free Wi-Fi
  • Daily Maid service and English Speaking Villa Manager
  • All linen and towels
  • Free Daily Continental Breakfast
  • We paid extra for a chef to prepare breakfast, lunch and dinner at a cost of THB2,500++/ plus food

Did you have to organize visa in advance?

No, processed on arrival at Koh Samui airport – possibly the quaintest airport in the world!

How was the flight?

The flight was quick and smooth but take your own entertainment as there is none provided. Food and drinks included in the price – the breakfast meal was pretty dreadful, but the dinner option on the return flight was good.

How far was the hotel from the airport? How did you get to hotel?

Airport transfers were booked by one family (with 3 small kids) and the other family hired a car from an agent at the airport which was easy. Driving in Koh Samui is very straightforward and it’s good to have the flexibility to do some exploring.

What did you think of the Ban Laem Set?

The villa was stunning. It was tucked away down a small track and so we had total peace and quiet.

Koh Samui 1

It comfortably accommodated all the guests in the four large bedrooms and the layout of two separate sides of the villa joined by the communal area and set around the swimming pool was perfect for two families. The villa was beautifully finished, very well equipped, big kitchen, large dining table, large bedrooms, high ceilings and a very decent sized pool which was ideal for the whole family.

How was your room? What baby/kid amenities had been provided?

All the rooms had very comfortable beds, with mosquito nets around them (although no one was bitten for the entire stay). 2 out of 4 rooms had ensuite, with the other 2 sharing a large bathroom with huge bath and shower. There was a high chair, cutlery, plates and cups for the kids, and a travel cot was provided. The villa manager was very accommodating of the children and provided some pool toys to keep them entertained.

How were the facilities?

The pool was perfect for kids and adults –shallow for around a third so that non-swimmers could still enjoy it. There was also a pagoda which was perfect for sundowners or a midday nap. Unfortunately the gravel surrounding the pagoda wasn’t particularly kind on little feet.

We also had a massage therapist visit on several occasions to provide traditional Thai massage.

The villa was located directly next to the beach so we had an uninterrupted sea view. However the sea was roughly 500m away over rather rough sand covered in dead coral and shells so it wasn’t really suitable for letting the kids run around and play.

Did you do any trips/excursions? How did you book them? Would you recommend them?

We spent most of the trip relaxing by the pool although did visit a local waterfall which had elephant rides and jeep excursions available. We took the kids to feed elephants to the bananas and hike up to the waterfall, but it was quite a tough walk and the waterfall was pretty dry so that element was a bit disappointing.

How was the food?

We ate in for each meal and the chef cooked some fabulous Thai and western dishes. We selected our meals the night before for the following day and he cooked separate meals for the kids and adults.

How was the staff?

The staff were wonderful. The villa manager spoke excellent English, was always available and ensured we always had everything we needed. She was also very flexible and ensured that we didn’t need to check out until 3pm on departure day.

We also had a housekeeper so the villa was always spotless, beds were made and towels were refreshed. There was a handyman on site who dealt with the occasional issues with aircon units and the chef did all the shopping and cooking.

How was the trip overall? What tips would you give to someone booking this holiday?

The trip was absolutely wonderful. It was utterly relaxing, the kids had a blast running around the villa, jumping in and out of the pool, and watching the stars at night. Everything was taken care of so we were able to really relax and unwind. The chef was really worth paying for – we ate so well and never had to worry about shopping or cooking.

Would you go back?

In a word, Yes! It’s just a question of when.
