For the last four Christmases we have gathered together our far flung family to meet in Thailand. Whilst I prefer the more laid back vibe of Koh Samui, for weather reasons (my family are olympic sun worshippers) we’ve stuck to Phuket.
This year I took a gamble on staying in an area of Phuket I didn’t know. We couldn’t afford a beachfront villa – villa rates over the high season go up extortionate amounts – so I chose a villa in Kathu Valley, overlooking the Loch Palm golf course. The gamble totally paid off, the villa was phenomenal and even came with a driver so we could take trips to the beach etc.
Hiring a villa is lots of fun but more importantly, can save you the $$ if you’re staying in a large group. Our villa was far cheaper than if we had booked five luxury hotel rooms, especially as the villa hire included a chef and local grocery shopping is inexpensive.

Loch Palm Villa, Kathu Valley – Phuket, Thailand
From Hong Kong I booked Thai Airways flights through my travel agent, Daryl at Concorde Travel. My family from the UK flew Thai Airways from London Heathrow to Bangkok and then another Thai Airways flight to Phuket.
I used Paul at Asian Luxury Villas whom I’ve used the past few years. He’s pretty good and will send you a list of suitable villas in your price range. However, in future, and for anyone reading this who’s interested in booking Loch Pam Villa, I will go to the villa owner Jeremy from Amazing Phuket Property direct:
The price of the villa included a chef, use of a driver and minivan for 8 hours a day and 1 set of airport transfers. We had to pay 50% deposit and then 50% approx. 45 days before our holiday. The only other cost we had to pay were groceries (which you do during your visit) and also cash for a security deposit on the villa (which you usually get returned unless you trash the place!)
The villa has one baby cot and one high chair available. We required a second baby cot so Paul suggested we use Phuket Baby Rentals which has a huge selection of baby equipment for hire. It’s a great service and I’d definitely use it again in Phuket.
Loch Palm Villa Location
The villa is approx. 40 mins drive from Phuket Airport. It is on a quiet road, backing on to Loch Palm Golf Course. It was very quiet and we loved the fact that there was nobody on either side of us and you rarely saw anyone on the golf course. If you like being able to wander out of your villa and down to some nearby shops then you might not like the location. However, it’s only a 5 minute drive to nearby shops and a 20 minute drive to the hectic hustle & bustle of Patong.
Loch Palm Villa has seven bedrooms in total although we had paid to use four of them. There’s an enormous master bedroom with a balcony with beautiful views overlooking the golf course.
The master has a huge walk in wardrobe where you could easily put a travel cot and a large bathroom with shower and jacuzzi.
There’s another large sized bedroom, similar to the master which can also be accessed by a separate staircase. The other two bedrooms we used, each had a double bed and shared a bathroom.
Kitchen & Dining Room
There is a large, airy open plan kitchen & dining room. There are also several outdoor dining tables.
The villa has a pool table which is lots of fun and a cosy lounge area with a big sofa and satellite TV.
Pool & Garden
Let’s face it, you’re here to enjoy the outdoors. The pool is massive with a set of shallow stairs at one end, perfect for toddlers to sit with their buckets & spades. There is a large shallow section, easy for parents to stand with their babies and then a deep section where you can dive.
One of the best things about Loch Palm Villa is the grassy area next to the pool, fantastic for kids.
The villa is also spacious with at least 3 different outdoor seated areas you can escape to with a book or have an afternoon snooze.
Our chef was also our Villa Manager Khun Am. She is amazing and will cook up an incredible range of food from delicious Thai fare to fish & chips for the kids. The food was so good we rarely left the villa. One night they even put a delicious BBQ for us.
For me, what made this villa stand out were its staff. Jeremy and Am live onsite and are therefore readily available to help you out from booking restaurants to suggesting day trips. Khun Am was amazing, whipping up fruit shakes at 3pm to producing amazing (and endless!) spring rolls and satays. This is the ultimate relaxation villa, with its peaceful location and spacious, airy feel.
For us, we didn’t mind not being by the beach as the holiday was about hanging out with family. It didn’t help that on our brief foray to Kata Beach, the sea was plagued with jellyfish!
We can’t wait to return one day…
