A Trip to Western Australia – Busselton & Beyond!

I have visited much of the East Coast and Central Australia but never been to the West.  It’s high up on my to-do list with friends raving about their trips to the Margaret River.  I still haven’t been (Australian Tourist Board, would you like to send me?!) but lucky for you Stuti is here to share her trip:

Western Australia beach

Who: 10 of us went – 6 adults, 4 kids (6, 2, 1.3 and 1 yr old)
Where: We flew into Perth and drove 240km south to a small town called Busselton
When: 1-10 August (weather was good first 3 days and the last 3 days.  In between was non stop rain – the heaviest ever recorded in the last 25 years in Western Australia)

Flight
Booked online with Singapore Airlines, Hong Kong – Perth (via Singapore).  In a way it was good as we got some time off the plane and with kids it mattered a lot.  Outbound was a day flight and the return was overnight.

Car Hire
Hired a car from Perth Airport (Europcar) and drove to Busselton (approx. 2.5 hrs)

Accommodation
We stayed in an apartment, the Busselton Beach Resort.  We chose it as we have a timeshare with RCI.  The apartment was great with 2 bedrooms, a fully functional kitchen and living room.  The resort had tennis, pool, spa, cycling etc

Day Trips

  • 45 minute drive to the Margaret River area to see the wineries, chocolate factory, cheese factory
    Margaret River
  • Augusta to see the whales in the ocean.  This was a must do activity although it was raining the day we went for the trip.  Still managed to spot a few whales and the kids loved it!
  • Dunsborough to the Nidilgi Caves at Yallingup.  There are very nice limestone caves, you can go down deep and see crystals!

  • Busselton has a 1.8km long wooden jetty out to sea (the longest in the southern hemisphere!) and a train runs on it. There is an underwater observatory at the end of the jetty.  We could not see much as the underwater visibility was poor.  Otherwise I’m sure it would have been a great experience..

  • Perth – Clock Tower, walk around the Swan River area – it is beautiful!

Kangaroos

We loved this area of Western Australia.  It is a nice relaxing place with loads of animal farms, wineries etc around.  I would highly recommend it for families.  The best part of coming from Hong Kong was the fact that there was no jetlag as no time difference!  Just keep your fingers crossed it doesn’t rain!
