Lovely Lanzarote

Today a little Canary Island love with some ideas on exursions in Lanzarote, brought to you by Catherine Lavinia.

Lanzarote is famed for its great year round climate, offering a sunny escape both during the winter months and during the summer. Famous for its landscape, which is almost lunar in style, caused by volcanic eruptions meeting the sea, Lanzarote offers adventure and relaxation hand in hand.

There are of course lots of opportunities to explore this unique landscape. Timanfaya National Park is an area of Lanzarote that is made up entirely of volcanic formations and features numerous volcanoes – among its most well-known volcanoes are La Montaña de Fuego (Fire Mountain), la Caldera del Corazoncillo (Little Heart Cauldron) and Montaña Rajada (Cracked Mountain).

There is still a lot of volcanic activity in the park – you’ll see several demonstrations of how hot it really is just a few metres below the surface when water is poured into a bore hole and immediately erupts with steam like a geyser, or when a dry brush is thrown into a hole and catches fire. You can also sample food cooked over geothermal heat (a cast iron grill is placed over a hole in the ground and food is cooked on it) and take a guided walk, bus tour or camel ride through the volcanic landscape. A trip to this amazing park is certainly not to be missed.

For more man made pursuits, the Guinate Tropical Park and Penguin Paradise is a great choice. At the foot of an extinct volcano and set amidst gardens, waterfalls and ponds this nature park has a variety of animals, birds, fish and reptiles and is worth a visit if travelling with children. The Jameos del Agua on Lanzarote are part of a volcanic cave system with collapsed roofs which have been turned into auditoriums, swimming pools, gardens and restaurants by a local artist. They really do offer something very different and rather striking for visitors to admire.

There are of course lots of other excursions and activities on this beautiful Spanish island ,as well as a wealth of  Lanzarote hotels from which to choose, so why not pick your favourite and head to Lanzarote to explore on your next holiday.
