Indonesian island hideaway of Nihiwatu – yes please!

I recently learnt about a new place I (plus munchkins) simply must visit.  If you’re Bali bound, why not think about taking one extra flight from Bali (approx. 1 hour) to the exclusive island hideaway of Nihiwatu on Sumba Island.  Tripadvisor’s legion of Nihiwatu fans give it 5 stars with quotes such as “a magical trinity of location, culture and relaxation for those who possess uncompromising standards for privacy, space, and a search for what’s real”.

Choose from one of the sumptuous villas or suites, built in keeping with the islands look and feel.  While away the hours in paradise by snorkelling, boating, fishing, visiting villages, hiking to the waterfall and exploring the reefs.  For young children they can swim in the child-friendly pool and the resort offers painting/drawing supplies and beach toys.

What I love about Nihiwatu is that it has been an engine for change for the local Sumba island community, from providing jobs to education on looking after the environment.  Before you go, you might want to check out The Sumba Foundation to see how you can give back.

Although I haven’t been (yet!), if you are looking for a super duper kids club with lots of people around and all day activities, I would say it’s not for you.  Instead, book yourself into one of the many large resorts that Bali has to offer.

If you are looking for an unspoilt, tropical paradise with a luxury laid back feel, get yourself to Nihiwatu pronto!
