Jetlag & Mayhem’s 2016 Travel Year Roundup

Wow I can’t believe how quickly this year has flown by. 2016 has been an amazing year of travel for Jetlag & Mayhem. We’ve ticked off some awesome new destinations including Australia’s Margaret River and the US state of Wisconsin. We’ve also revisited old destinations, including Cambodia’s Phnom Penh, a city I hadn’t visited for 20 years.

2016 has also been a funny year for my blog. I decided that I wouldn’t stress myself out trying to get nominated for blog awards, frantically spending hours growing my social media and worrying what other people thought of me. Despite this I was apparently the subject of some unwanted attention on a parenting website due to an old (and controversial post) on Phenergan. You have to take it all with a pinch of salt – that’s what happens when you are a blogger and everything you write is in the public domain. On a positive note it’s been wonderful hearing from all you lovely readers from the around the world.  I’ve fielded a lot of questions on Zika and alternative travel options. I’ve also had many people asking about the Fly Tot flight inflatable and also Fly Legs Up Hammock.  I also truly appreciate those who take the time to write reviews for Jetlag & Mayhem. Hopefully our tips and tricks have provided many of you with inspiration!

I also asked Mesdames Jetlag & Mayhem what their favourite trips were.  Jetlag (age 7) answered with London and Phuket (tellingly both trips that involve our extended family).  Mayhem (age 5) answered Phuket. Which could be because she is currently in Phuket and can’t remember much past last week.

Where has Jetlag & Mayhem been in 2016?

Seems like it was my biggest year for travel, visiting the following places:

Phuket – Perth & the Margaret River – London – Taipei – Chicago & Wisconsin – Ibiza – Moscow – Phnom Penh – Macau

What has been my favourite trip?

I adore our US roadtrips. A tremendous amount of planning goes into them and I’m always amazed by how family friendly travel in the US is. This year we went to Chicago (amazing) and Wisconsin, easily one of my favourite routes. You can read all about it here.

Favourite food?

Taiwan’s capital Taipei is the home of amazing street food. We sampled the delights at two different night markets including the famous Raohe St. However my favourite edible has to go to the ‘Bomb Pancake’ that we sampled at the top of the Maokong Gondola.

Favourite drink?

My kids will tell you it is the vanilla milkshake at ‘A Spoonful of Sugar’ in Nai Harn, Phuket.  I will tell you that it was the delicious rose at the Laurance Winery in Australia’s Margaret River.  Not only was the wine exceptional but the whole experience so family friendly with a playground and delicious food for all ages.

Favourite ‘sight’?

Seeing St Basil’s Cathedral in Moscow was breathtaking.  If I ever return, I would love to book a tour to go inside it. That and the Bolshoi Ballet!

Favourite accommodation?

An airbnb rental near Madison, Wisconsin became our American dream home for 3 nights. The large garden with playset and fire pit was surrounded by corn fields as the eye could see. A far cry from our city slicking lifestyle in Hong Kong.  Once again Airbnb came up trumps, offering far more than a hotel could for a half of the price.

Favourite hotel?

The Shangri-La’s Far Eastern Hotel in Taipei was stunning, with a beautiful room, rooftop pool and unbeatable views.

Favourite airline?

I do love Cathay Pacific for upgrading me from Premium to Business on the longhaul nightmare that is Hong Kong to New York (thank you again). However, my favourite airline for 2017 has to be…. Aeoroflot!  I went in with incredibly low expectations (my fear of flying didn’t help) and I was pleasantly surprised.  Comfy economy seats, great entertainment and even the food ok.  Best of all were the orange stewardess outfits.

Best travel product?

Whilst I love the Fly Tot, my new favourite travel product is the Fly Legs Up Hammock which can be used for kids and adults.  It creates a comfy foot hammock making a longhaul economy flight, that bit more bearable.

Top travel tip

If you’re going on a beach/pool holiday, pack swimwear for all the family in your hand luggage.  That way if your luggage is tardy/lost, you can still enjoy the pool!

Best travel memory of 2017

We have had such an incredible year of traveling. However, the highlight for Jetlag & Mayhem was a trip to Phnom Penh. Here we met with Vichera, the 8 year old girl we sponsor through the Cambodian Children’s Fund. You can read more about our trip and the amazing work of the CCF here.

Great year! I’ve been to st Petersburg but would love to go to Moscow #farawayfiles

That’s an incredible amount of adventures in one year! I don’t bother with awards either – I’m not a great self promoter so asking for votes from people I barely know is my worst nightmare! That said, I have been enjoying Instagram this year, it’s a social media that I enjoy, rather than feeling obliged to do. #farawayfiles

Looks like 2016 was a fun year of travels. I am quite partial to a Margaret River rosé myself and am looking forward to spending some time in WA when we return to Australia in a few years. Maybe Cathay is the airline to go to for upgrades as I had a lovely one from Seoul to Melbourne on a work trip a few years ago, much to the disgust of my 6 foot 3 colleague. But I sure was not giving that up! Thanks for joining us on #farawayfiles

Great year of travels for you. That Fly Legs Up Hammock sounds such a brilliant idea – I’m always trying to curl up unsuccessfully on flights when trying to sleep and I’m sure something like that would work for me and the kids. We tried Airbnb for the first time last year – I’d definitely recommend them for city breaks with the family. Great to have you joining us on #FarawayFiles

Wow – how amazing to have that experience of meeting the girl you sponsor. What a full-packed year of travel. Love that travel hammock! Very cool. #farawayfiles

I must have that foot up hammock! Would be a lifesaver! Never seen one before. Looking up stat. Will check out your US Road trip next. Happy to have you joining in with #FarawayFiles – nice to “meet” you and we look forward to new posts to share in 2017! Cheers from Copenhagen, Erin

Thanks for the tip about the fly legs up hammock! I might get that when my son turns two and has to have his own seat!

Also, did you like Madison? I used to live there, so I’m always interested in reading about the city.

    1. Nicola

      We loved visiting Madison!
