Koh Samui Escape at Rocky’s Resort

A big thanks to Alisa Milburn for this post.  Alisa is a long time expat and the manager of website, The Help in Asia.  The blog provides useful information in English and Tagalog to support helpers and employers in Asia.

Rocky Resort

We decided to meet some friends at Rocky’s Resort in Koh Samui.  All together we were six adults and two kids aged 4 years to 22 months.  One family travelled from London, we travelled from Hong Kong with our 22 month old daughter and another couple travelled from Singapore.

We went in the first week of May 2013.  The weather was fantastic – rain only stopped play for an hour or so one morning.

Hotel Booking
We booked the hotel directly via email.  The staff were very prompt in answering questions I had regarding high chairs, babysitters and providing a car seat for the airport transfer.  We also requested to have a bungalow near our friends and this was done.

Flight
Flew to Koh Samui via Bangkok on Cathay Pacific and then transferred to Bangkok Airways.  I booked the flights directly with the airlines.

The flights were as good as they could be when travelling with a toddler!  The CX staff let my daughter stick post it notes and stickers all over the galley.  On the Bangkok Airways flight she was given a soft toy plane that she loved! A welcome surprise was the priority immigration lane at Bangkok Airport for young families, pregnant women, disabled and elderly people.  The staff directed us to it and it meant we avoided rather a long queue.

Koh Samui Airport Playground

My daughter loved the shaded playground located in the domestic terminal of Koh Samui airport.  It made passing the wait time at the airport very easy.

Airport Transfer
The airport transfer to Rockys was not included but a car seat was provided at no extra charge.  It was 90BHT one way but well worth it.  The transfer was approximately 25 minutes.

Rocky’s Resort
Rocky'sWe booked a Junior Ocean View Bungalow – the view was fantastic!  The room was a very generous size.  A nice cot and bedding was provided for my daughter and there was also a day bed available.  The King size bed was very high off the ground – something we noticed with an active toddler that likes to slide off the bed!

The facilities were great for a resort of this size.  We all commented that the resort still had a boutique and intimate feel to it as well as being family friendly.  There were two pools, a kids club and a snooker table.  Sea kayaks and snorkelling equipment were also provided.

Kids Club
We used the free kids club every day.  It was small but adequate room filled with toys and provided a nice break from the heat.  A very confident staff member called Oh, who was also our babysitter in the evening, supervised it.  Other staff members were called to help when it became busy.  The club also offered daily activities such as face painting and a 6pm movie night.  It is adjacent to one of the pools so the adults could relax within easy reach of the kids.  There wre no age restrictions on the kids so I was allowed to leave my 22 month old daughter while I grabbed an hour by the pool or ate lunch in peace!

Food
There were two restaurants.  The main restaurant is also adjacent to the kids club and pool.  Teh food was excellent and there was a comprehensive kids menu offering a range of pizzas, pastas, fried rice, sandwiches and chicken satay.  The kitchen also cooked steamed veggies on two nights at our request.  The kids menu also included kids cocktails which were fruit juice combinations – sweet but a good bribe offering to help get those steamed veggies down!

Trips
We did two trips to a beach nearby called Silver beach.  There is some shade by the beach and nice sand for the kids to get their hands into.  We ate lunch both times at a nice beachside restaurant.

Our kids loved the babysitters and we loved them so we did venture out for some adult time in the evening.  We had a lovely dinner at The Page Restaurant located in the Library Hotel.

Another highlight was some sundowners at the Conrad followed by a beach side dinner at Five Islands

Alisa’s Tips
Pre-book a baby sitter and request the same person each time.  This worked really well for us as the kids and the sitters got to know each other.  There was lots of demand for sitters so book early to avoid disappointment!
