Luxury in Mauritius and an Annabel Karmel inspired kids menu! The One&Only Le Saint Geran

I have always wanted to stay in a One&Only resort; exclusive and luxurious, just how I like to travel!  Unfortunately I still haven’t visited any of their properties but luckily for you, Shruti has just returned from Le Saint Geran in Mauritius. Located in the Indian Ocean, Mauritius’ peak season is Oct-April with lots of sunshine although cyclone risk Jan to March.

When:  Early March 2013.  Weather was gorgeous, a bit rainy every so often but for the most party, really warm and lovely

Holiday Booking
Booked through Amex Platinum as a package – flights with BA, staying at the One&Only Le Saint Geran.

The Flight
Night flights (London-Mauritus) both ways was a winner.  Husband very kindly upgraded us from Premium to Business which made the whole twelve hour flying time much more pleasant!  BA gave us a flat bed for our one year old on the way out which made for a very relaxing flight.

Airport Transfer
This was not included but a friend had referred a taxi service for the hour’s trip, reliable and nice:

One&Only Le Saint Geran
We booked a basic room but were eventually (after much persuasion and a night of bad sleep) upgraded to the junior suite as booking through Amex Platinum entitles you to an upgrade if there is availability.  The rooms were huge and spacious and just perfect for the kids – they both slept in the lounge and we slept in the bedroom.  There was a sliding door between the two rooms which was great and a balcony off both rooms.

The hotel provided a cot and steriliser.

Saint Geran PoolFacilities
The pool was nice albeit a bit small.  The beach is gorgeous

Kids Club
The Kids Club, KidsOnly was good although better for slightly older kids as had lots of computers etc.  They did have a nice baby room but the hotel was not that full and they didn’t have tons of activities on for kids.

This was where the hotel really shone – they had an amazing menu for kids designed by Annabel Karmel which had loads of healthy, different options.  The meals would come in a Bento Box with different compartments which the kids loved.  They also had delicious homemade fruit lollies which the girls thought were amazing.  The menu was vast and they tried lots of different things (including dim sum and chicken satay as well as the usual pasta/pizza options).  The chefs and waiters were very kind to the children (despite the huge mess they made) and did a great job of accommodating personal requests and explaining tropical fruits and the different kinds of fish to my three year old.

In Conclusion….
Le Saint Geran is more obviously luxurious than ‘family friendly’ but the staff were incredibly kind to the kids (e.g. when our luggage was delayed they fully kitted the kids out in swimwear, hats etc) and they would always stop and say hello to the children.  They also provided bread to the girls to feed the ducks and huge tropical fish every day.

The only complaint I had was that the hotel did not want to honour the upgrade that we were entitled to, so be careful if you are booking through American Express Platinum.  NB this is the second time I have had this problem with the One&Only chain, the first time being in Dubai.
