How To Exit A Hotel Room With All Your Belongings Intact!

We are midway through our Louisiana road trip and staying in a new place each night. It took a while for us to get in our packing groove, having left a few T-shirts in the wardrobe of our first hotel and a chargers in sockets.  There is an art to departing a hotel room with everything intact, here are my tips!

Kids on bed with ipad

  1. Deposit children on bed with iPad etc so you can pack up around them
  2. Check hotel safe for your valuables
  3. Go to bathroom, pull back shower curtain and collect up all your swimwear, toiletries etc
  4. Look behind the bathroom door to see if you have anything hanging up.  Remove all items by the sinks
  5. Check under all the beds and rifle through the bedding (especially if your kids have been playing).
  6. Do a clean sweep of any travel cots/cribs (there’s always a dummy lurking behind)
  7. Check all the chargers to see you haven’t left anything plugged in, including travel chargers
  8. Open up the wardrobe in case you’ve left something hanging (same for the drawers)
  9. Check the fridge for leftover milk bottles and food.
  10. Help yourself to all the free toiletries, notepads, coffee capsules and pens!

Love these – (nearly) leaving things hanging on the back of bathroom doors is my speciality. And there was always always a dummy tucked in a hidden corner of the cot. My three-year-old now likes to ‘help’ me pack… which often involves things coming back out of the suitcase…

Mine also packs like that 🙂

My favorite is No 10! That is so me!!!

I like how methodical you are, it saves time and the crazy searching all over the place we do when we leave which always leaves something in a corner somewhere and with multiple stays we’re never sure which place it was, then housekeeping comes and that’s it… we have to re-purchase something and that “something” isn’t always cheap. I’ll have to show this to my wife and we’ll make a new plan for an exit strategy.

pack the night before that gives you the next morning to discover anything forgotten

Thanks for this. Never was a post so well-needed. I consider it a personal victory if I exit a hotel or even family visit with all our belongings. Depositing kids on bed with iPad is probably the key stage here…I am too easily distracted and then forget where I got to to! The shower curtain gets us every time…

It always pays to bring something for the kids to do while on trip weather be it on the journey or this the packing and unpacking =) #MondayEscapes

  7. Mrs ATWWAH

Brilliant! Everyone should take a Mr ATWWAH with them when they travel. He’s such a geek when it comes to leaving places, checking everywhere thoroughly, every drawer etc. It really winds me up though as we’re usually running late.

      hahahah!

Haha! Great checklist. 🙂 I would add once everyone is out the door, send ONE person back for what we call an “idiot check.” The things we have found after we thought we were done, yikes!

    1. Nicola

I am taking onboard the ‘idiot check’!

There’s a real trip to departing a room with all your items. We both double check all the draws and cupboards – having two sets of eyes do the sweep is better than one. I also roughly make the beds before packing to prevent items getting caught in the sheets.

Great idea to make the beds

My pet hate is leaving something behind, and it always happens! I agree about checking under the bed and also among the bedding- my kids usually leave a top or pair of socks under the blankets. Thanks for sharing the tips (and I’m glad I’m not the only one who forget things!).

    1. Nicola

      We always forget something!

Plug chargers into sockets in highly visible places within the room, so that you will notice them during packing up. Bring a spare charger in case you do lose one.

      Thanks dad x

  12. Packing my Suitcase

    hahahaha great tips!
I am very paranoid about forgetting things in hotel rooms, even hough it never happened to me before! I always take a look around at least 3 times, even under the bed hahaha
