Cornwall Review: The Park At Mawgan Porth

Jetlag & Mayhem’s top Cornwall reviewer is back!  This time, Nicola takes a trip to The Park, Mawgan Porth with her husband, 3 kids (ages 3.5 and twins 22 months) and mum.

Cornwall - Beach How did you book the trip?
The whole trip was booked online.  My mum, kids and I took the train from Paddington – Exeter (2 hours) and my husband met us at Exeter station with the car / luggage (he had to work in the morning). The journey from Exeter was 1 1/2 -2 hours by car. To drive all the way it would take about 5-6 hours from London.

Cornwall - on train The train broke up the journey and was a new experience for the kids. They were OK – with the distraction of ipads, colouring and lots of snacks. Pretty similar experience to flying. Under 5s are free on trains and there was an unreserved carriage so we got there early and managed to get seats with a table. Apparently if you speak to the train manager they are good at sorting out seats for families with young kids. You can fly to Newquay airport which is 5 mins drive from Mawgan Porth.

What did the price include?
Just accommodation. It cost us around £1200 for a week (3 bed house)

What did you think of the Park at Mawgan Porth?
The Resort was all self catering with different types of accommodation – eco lodge, cottage, caravan, airstream, yurt. Modern, clean, spacious.
Travel cots, stairgates, highchairs, bed guards, kids plates/ cutlery provided free of charge

How were the facilities?
Perfect for families. Pools were 1 minute walk from our house, kids playground, trampoline, yurt tent full of toys.

There was a really good cafe / restaurant on site. Good kids menu and delicious local specialities for adults e.g. fresh seafood.

Was there kids club?

We went outside of school holidays but apparently there is a kids club during the summer holidays.

Was there a beach?

Beautiful beaches in Cornwall and Mawgan Porth is one of the best. Very clean and sandy. Great surf if you are into that and rock pools for kids to fish. Also lots of little caves to explore and a stream for kids to paddle in – good if they are a bit scared of waves.

Did you do any trips/excursions?
We just swam in the pool or went to local beach (5 mins walk) most days.

Cornwall - fishing village

We went to Padstow one afternoon which is a lovely bustling fishing town. We also visited Dairyland farm one day when it was a bit drizzly.

Cornwall - dairylandThere are loads of beautiful beaches near Mawgan Porth e.g. Watergate bay,  Harlyn Bay, Treyarnon but we just went to same beach each day rather than getting in car as kids too young to appreciate different beaches!

How was the food?

Great food in Cornwall. Cornish pasties, ice creams and fish and chips! It was my birthday whilst we were away so my husband booked The Scarlet for dinner one night. Stunning views and delicious food. The onsite restaurant at The Park was great for catering for kids and Bedruthan Steps hotel also has a great kid friendly restaurant. Otherwise we had a few meals of pizza / fish and chips on the beach and lots of picnics.

We had self catering accommodation and arranged for an online shop to be delivered on our day of arrival.

How was the staff?

Super friendly and helpful. We were given a free upgrade to our accommodation upon arrival because they’d just had a cancellation. They gave us lots of tips on what to do / where to eat in the area.

How was the trip overall?
Great holiday. Lots of different accommodation to choose from. Our weather in early June was mixed. We had a few half days or rain but otherwise mild.  We were on the beach in shorts/flip flops and needed sun cream on some days.  Not quite bikini weather though!

Would you go back?
Definitely – the hotel has an amazing location (just 5 mims walk to a stunning beach, even our 22 month olds were OK with the walk) and enough to do on site with young kids for 1/2 a day. So we didn’t need to use our car much at all. We’re keen to go back with friends.
