Festive Family Fun in London

Here are some ideas for a little festive family fun in my home town of London…  Enjoy!

Christmas London

The run-up to Christmas is a great time for families to get together and what better way to do just that than with a weekend away? The English capital is a great place to visit throughout the year and over the festive season arguably more so than usual. So, whether you’ve already booked train tickets to London or are planning to do so, we think the following are worth a peek:

Southbank Centre Christmas Market

Take in the scenery and soak up the atmosphere beside the River Thames at the Southbank Centre Christmas Market. There you can enjoy some fabulous festive foods and – of course – a glass of mulled wine. It’s open until 10pm every night of the week right up until December 24th and could be a great spot to get in to the spirit of the season and spend an evening under the stars. As well as the wooden huts you’d expect, you’ll find a good selection of shops and restaurants too, so you shouldn’t be short of somewhere to rest your legs and get out of the cold.

Skate at Somerset House

You’ll find ice rinks at various locations across the city but, for us, few are as impressive as the one located in the courtyard of the stunning 18th-century Somerset House. There you’ll be able to get your skates on and take in the sounds and sights (including an impressive Christmas tree) or simply unwind with a hot drink and people watch. It also plays host to a number of DJs on certain evenings across the season, so for a night out with a difference why not give it a go?

Services at St Martin-in-the-Fields

Head over to Trafalgar Square and you’ll find St Martin-in-the-Fields church, which has a number of concerts and services running right through until New Year’s Eve. The busy schedule features afternoon and evening events, so it’s well worth finding out what’s on before getting on trains to London.

Take in a pantomime

Pantomimes are a British tradition and this year there are plenty to choose from, oh yes there is! TV and theatre star Matthew Kelly is joined by comedienne Jo Brand for Aladdin at the New Wimbledon Theatre for a show that’s sure to be packed full of laughs. It runs from December 6th right through until January 12th,so there’s plenty of chance to catch it.
