Review of Red Doors Farm – Luxury Self Catering in Devon

My home island has so much on offer for holidays with the kids from action packed cities like London and Edinburgh to the rolling hills of the quintessential English countryside.  I caught up with my friend Nicola the other day who was telling me about her stay in luxury, self catering cottages in Devon.

Located in the South West of the UK, Devon is one of those counties that you will end up visiting at some point with its National Parks, quaint villages and beautiful stretches of coast.  Nicola and I have spent many a holiday together from the Greek islands to backpacking around Asia.  She no longer travels light due to 8 month old twins AND a two year old!  So if she recommends somewhere for the ultimate easy break then you know it’s going to be good!

Who: Nicola and her mum, husband and three kids (twin 8 month olds and a 2 year old)
When: 1 week in March – weather was sunny and not too cold
Where: Red Doors Farm, Blackdown Hills in Devon

Hotel Booking
We had been recommended Red Doors through friends who had stayed there previously and booked our trip direct with the hotel online.  The major draw of these luxury cottages was the amount of baby kit that is provided for free.  You are allowed up to two of any of the items from travel cots to play pens and baby baths.

Getting There
The drive from London took approx. 3 hours

Our Cottage
Red Doors has six luxury cottages and we were in a 6 person one.  The cottage would be too small for 6 adults but was absolutely perfect for our family.  The cottage has 3 bedrooms (1 double and 2 twins). There was a proper kitchen, dining room, lounge and utility area.

Facilities
Red Doors has a great heated indoor pool.  They’ve cleverly put a playpen on the side so that you can have a swim whilst your baby plays.  There are also lots of pool toys.

There’s an indoor playroom stuffed full with toys and the gardens have lots of ride along toys, swings and a trampoline.  The best bit for us were the animals onsite and they would organise animal feeding for the little kids.

Excursions
There’s so much to do in Devon.  We took the kids for day trips to Lyme Regis, Sidmouth and the Donkey Sanctuary which was brilliant.  We also left the kids with my mum (although Red Doors can organise babysitters) and went to the amazing River Cottage in Axminster for a slap up dinner one night.

In Conclusion!
I would recommend this trip to anyone with young kids, it’s a very easy holiday.  The cottages are luxurious and it’s great to have all the kit provided and set up for you.  We paid approx. GBP 1,000 for the week in a 3 bed luxury cottage which I thought was good value.
