Old World Charm At The Magnificent Lago Mar Beach Resort

Occasionally you stumble upon a magical resort that gets it just right.  Lago Mar Beach Resort & Club, located in Florida’s Fort Lauderdale is one of those places.  Picture an elegant, classic resort next to a pristine beach where family fun is the name of the game. This was the type of American resort I had always dreamed of visiting; splashing around in the pool, an afternoon playing shuffleboard and mini-golf then watching our kids in the playground whilst we glugged away on fruity cocktails.

Where is the Lago Mar Beach Resort?
The resort is located in Fort Lauderdale on Florida’s south-east coast, adjacent to the Atlantic Ocean.  It took us just under three hours to drive down from Cocoa Beach, where we had been visiting the Kennedy Space Center. My sister took advantage of British Airways’ new service to Fort Lauderdale and the hotel was about 15 minutes from the airport.
Apparently the best time to visit Fort Lauderdale is between December to April. We were there in July and the weather was perfect. Sunny days with the occasional shower.  Be aware, you are at risk of hurricanes from June to November, something that was made all too clear this year with the onslaught of Hurricane Irma.
What kind of room should I book should I book?
Lago Mar Resort & Club offers 204 luxurious rooms, which include 160 suites. Our family of four stayed in a One-Bedroom Executive Suite which was ENORMOUS!
There was a separate bedroom with two double beds, a large living room which housed the sofa bed and small dining table. In addition there was a small kitchenette and large bathroom. Both the bedroom and living room had TVs.  More importantly we all had the best sleeps of our lives in this suite!  The beds are incredibly comfortable and the curtain blackout is amazing (regular readers will know this is a hotel bugbear of mine). All this meant we would wake up at 9am thinking it was still the middle of the night.
Our room also had a lovely balcony which overlooked the main pool and out to the beach.
My sister went for a Two-Bedroom Suite which was even more ginormous!  Instead of a pool view, her balcony faced directly on to the beach which is lovely.
What are the facilities like?
Let’s face it, you’re in a resort like Lago Mar to idle the days away, relaxing and having fun. The resort has two pools, a quiet lap pool and an amazing 9,000 square foot lagoon style pool.
The latter is just amazing and the perfect depth for our kids. The pool loops round and round and there are plentiful sun loungers.
Just in front of the lagoon pool, you’ll find even more entertainment; table tennis table, mini golf, tennis, playground and hammocks.
Walk a bit further out and you are on to a glorious expanse of private beach with crystal clear water. We loved paddling around in the surf, admiring the cruise ships setting sail in the distance.
In case you need to work off the buffet breakfast, there’s a small but fully functioning gym and also volleyball and basketball courts.
What are the dining options?
The Palm Garden Dining room is open daily for buffet breakfast and a la carte lunch.  We tended to eat most of the meals at the outdoor Ocean Grill. Here we had delicious salads, burgers, hot dogs etc all while sitting in our bathers by the pool (I told you we were being lazy!)
For Pina Colada O’Clock, check out the delicious cocktails at the Promenade Bar by the pool. We also paid a daily visit to the Soda Shop for ice creams.
Fort Lauderdale has a huge variety of dining options. On the one occasion we dragged ourselves away from Lago Mar, we ate at the fabulous Chima Steakhouse.

Why stay at Lago Mar?
In a world filled with ubiquitous chains and soulless hotel rooms, it was such a treat to enjoy this unique Fort Lauderdale resort.  It just felt as if everyone there was enjoying old-school family fun in luxurious yet relaxed surrounds.  The staff are welcoming and friendly without being over the top and it’s obvious many of the guests feel quite at home there. Hats off to the Banks family who have owned and operated Lago Mar for over 50 years.
Lago Mar’s website bills it as:

‘Understated, not loud. Gracious, not pretentious. Deferential, not presumptuous. In short, a sophisticated retreat where you can appreciate the enduring traditions of genuine hospitality.’
I could not have summed up the resort any more eloquently. I can’t wait to return one day! Plus if anyone from Lago Mar is reading this, please can you please also share where you get your amazing bedding from, I need to recreate that dream bed in my home!
