Flight Review: London Heathrow to Hong Kong with a 4 mth old

Most parents have a story that starts “Damn that <insert airline> they completely messed up our bassinet booking” or “I’ll never fly <insert airline> the air stewards were dreadful”.  Today I’m delighted to give you Laura’s recent review of a flight with British Airways where the staff onboard went above and beyond to help her.

BA Bassinet

Who: Laura & 4mth old baby Lily (although that’s not a picture of Lily!)
What:  British Airways BA27 Heathrow to Hong Kong (departs London 10pm), Economy

Flight Booking
Used airmiles and booked ticket through travel agent

Getting to Heathrow
Taxi to Heathrow Express at Paddington station.

Check-In
I would give this 6/10.  I was by myself and struggling to load suitcases onto the belt with Lily asleep in the Ergo.  No BA crew offered to help.  However, the lady at check-in was very good at explaining why I couldn’t have the aisle seat (the infant oxygen mask is located on window only).

Security at Heathrow
Impressed as they whisked me to the front of the Family Channel.  The Security staff were very good and apologetic at having to check me after I beeped going through the gate as Lily asleep and they tried very hard not to wake her up.  Then very apologetic when she did wake up!  I only had to taste the water in my bottles, not the formula.

Heathrow Airport Facilities
I gave Lily a bottle in Giraffe restaurant and also at the Gate.  I thought the toilets/changing facilities were excellent.

Onboard

Priority Boarding – I was rushed onboard before anyone else as I had a baby.

Seat – I thought the Economy seat was rubbish but then I was comparing it to Business class!

Bassinet – This was really small for Lily…

Top Tip – Lily was amazingly behaved.  My top tip (probably a bad one) is that I totally over fed Lily and it worked like a dream…  She was so sleepy and sated that she just smiled the whole time.

Staff – Amazing 11/10!  They literally could not do enough for me when they saw I was travelling by myself.  They looked after Lily when I needed to go to the loo, even took her for twenty minutes so I could have a nap!  They also took pity on me and topped up my glass with business class champagne and lots of yummy food.
