Top Tips For Your Baby’s First Swim!

Our kids started swimming lessons before they could even walk.  It’s a skill for life, and a fun part of all our holidays.

Here are my sister Georgina’s top tips on what you’ll need for your child’s first swim:

Nappies

  • If your kids are still in nappies, you’ll need a disposable swim nappy, as a regular nappy would swell up in the water.  Whilst you can purchase them in most destinations, it’s worth packing in advance so you don’t have to scramble around trying to buy them.
  • Some pools (and swim schools) then ask you to wear a neoprene ‘happy nappy’ on top of the disposable one.  These act as an extra barrier to keep the pool clean, and can help to keep your child warm.

  • The eco-friendly and money-saving option is to buy a reusable swim nappy.  Bambino Mio have a really nice range of reusable swim nappies which have a soft cotton terry lining.  There’s no need to use an additional swim nappy with them so should last you for a while!  They are available for HKD 125 in Hong Kong at all the usual stockists.

Swimsuits

  • There are plenty of adorable swimsuits and trunks available, but think first about sun exposure and protection from the cold.
  • If you’ll be indoors, I’d recommend a neoprene baby wrap with velcro fastening.  These are like baby wetsuits, and provide an extra layer of warmth.
  • If you’ll be out in the sunshine, you’ll need a full length suit that provides UV protection.  I prefer one with separate top and bottom (for easier nappy changing) and a hat with a brim and a flap to cover the neck.

  • Don’t forget to buy and apply water-resistant suncream too.

Playing in the pool

  • Baby swim seats (essentially a rubber ring with a seat inside) are great for little ones like this one
